History in the making for VWFL

20 Jul 2023

This Sunday sees the first ever all-female Victorian Wheelchair Football League (VWFL) match at the Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre (MSAC).

On Sunday, July 23rd, the Victorian Wheelchair Football League (VWFL) will make history by hosting the inaugural Women’s Showcase match as part of their second-ever Pride Round.

In what promises to be an action packed day, the exciting marquee event will take place alongside a highly anticipated double-header at the Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre (MSAC).

The Collingwood VWFL team will first take on Richmond before regrouping to tackle an in-form Hawthorn side. Collingwood’s Co-Vice Captain, Alex Gale-Grime will also play in the Women’s Showcase match on the day.

The all-female match not only highlights the League's commitment to inclusivity but also marks a significant step forward in promoting equal opportunities for women in sport.

In recent years, there has been a growing recognition of the need for equal opportunities in sports, irrespective of gender, sexual orientation, or ability.

It is essential that sport be an arena where individuals can participate and excel, regardless of perceived barriers.

The VWFL's commitment to celebrating inclusivity through the Women’s Showcase match, invites women of all-abilities to embrace the camaraderie and competitiveness of wheelchair football.

Spectators can expect a display of remarkable skill, teamwork, and determination as all teams battle it out on the court throughout the day.

The matches will undoubtedly showcase the extraordinary talent of female athletes in the VWFL, dispelling any doubts about their ability to excel in competitive sports like wheelchair football.

The Collingwood Football Club has proudly championed and participated in the push for diversity and inclusion in the AFLW and the VWFL is no different.

The Club believes in the power of sport to break down barriers and make a positive impact and will continue to endorse and support movements towards inclusion for all genders, orientations, and abilities.

As the Collingwood VWFL and CWFL teams prepare themselves for this epic showdown, we extend our well wishes and encouragement for Sunday’s matches.
