The Barrawarn Program oversees partnerships and activities in support of First Nations people.
Through Barrawarn, we celebrate the history and legacy of our First Nations players, staff, members and fans. In telling their stories, we help raise awareness of the culture and history of First Nations people, and their communities. In doing so, we aim to promote reconcilliation for all Australians, leading to cultural safety and unity.
Why is it important to us?
To celebrate the history and legacy of our First Nations players, staff, members and fans.
In telling their stories, we help raise awareness of the culture and history of First Nations people and their communities. In doing so, we aim to promote reconciliation for all Australians.
It's important because:
• 77% of AFL Women's and 40% of AFL Indigenous or multi-cultural players reported not being satisfied with how a racism incident was handled once reported. (AFLPA Player Survey, 2023)
• Recommendation #18 of the 'Do Better' report recommended the club share its processes and reflections with the wider AFL community, and to proactively support anti-racism and inclusion throughout the code.
• Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people (aged 25-64 years) were more likely than non-Indigenous people of the same age to have left school at Year 9 or below. (Australian Bureau of Statistics)
• Victorian Aboriginal women are 45x more likely to experience family violence than non-Aboriginal women. (Department of Health)
