Match Report: Hawks too strong for Pies

06 Jun 2023

The Collingwood Victorian Wheelchair Football League (VWFL) team were defeated by a strong Hawthorn outfit on Sunday at the Boroondara Sports Complex.

Despite a positive attitude and comprehensive preparation, the Pies had a slow start to the match that they couldn’t quite recover from.

Before the match, the team discussed the need to keep their handballs low and sharp to remove the chance of a turn over against the tall Hawthorn players.

The main goal of the game was to be the first team to hit the scoreboard but unfortunately, regardless of consistent effort and persistence, this didn’t happen.

Martyn Ford played his first game of the season which helped the team immensely.

Collingwood kept Hawthorn at arm’s reach by half time, but let the hawks slip away in the second half with turnovers and not generating enough scoring shots to compete.

Although the game was a big defeat for the senior Collingwood team, players were given ample to improve on and plenty to work towards for the next time they match up against Hawthorn.

COMMUNITY WHEELCHAIR TEAM

The Collingwood Community Wheelchair League (CWFL) team had an impressive win on the weekend by beating the Hawthorn community side by 45 points.

The team was able to keep them to 21 points with no score involvements during the 4th quarter.

Coach Paddles fielded an experienced team with Brett Newman playing forward, paired with Jack Elliot to help assist him with his new role in the forward line.

Matthew Blunt was dominant in the ruck, giving the Pies first access to the ball at most centre stoppages.

Collingwood dominated the play by scoring 9 goals to 3 with Brett and Jack sharing all 9 goals between the two of them.

Andrew and Aaron were very solid in defence keeping Hawthorn to just 3 goals for the entire game.

Both teams are looking to improve, clean up some errors and gain some more confidence when they are back playing in two weeks’ time against Essendon.

Upcoming matches for both teams are as follows:

Collingwood VWFL – Sunday, June 18th against Essendon starting at 12pm at the Boroondara Sports Complex.
