When the game was hanging in the balance, Michael Telban was up for the challenge, nailing a set shot that ultimately sealed the contest.
His composed finish pushed the margin beyond Richmond’s reach, ensuring the Pies kept their spot at the top end of the 2025 VWFL Community Division ladder.
The game had plenty of standout performers for the black and white.
Captain Troy Hawkins played a pivotal role in defence, mopping up loose balls and setting up attacking plays with his clean disposal.
Defender Matthew Blunt’s work rate was immense, providing support at both ends of the ground, while Arnold Razon (5) proved unstoppable up forward.
Despite the Tigers throwing multiple defenders at him — sometimes as many as four —Arnold managed to find space all game and finished with an impressive five goal-haul.
The Pies finished Round 8 sitting second on the ladder, just behind Richmond on percentage, with the added advantage of a game in hand.
As the team eyes the final two games of the home and away season, they’ll be full of confidence after another gritty win.
Championship Division
The Wheelchair Magpies' Championship Division side go down to Richmond in the Victorian Wheelchair Football League’s Championship Division, losing by 68 points.
The clash saw the Pies experiment with new combinations and positional changes, as Coach Andrew Paddle looked to unlock fresh options heading into the final rounds of the 2025 VWFL Season.
The main objective? Experiment.
Several different role changes were trialled to see what clicked, and while the scoreboard didn’t fall in the Pies’ favour, the team gained valuable insights that could prove decisive in the run home.
Among the best was Josh Christian, who worked tirelessly through the centre and across half-back, ensuring the Pies had clean passages and controlled transitions.
Martyn Ford was equally impressive, covering plenty of ground and working hard to create space for his teammates with timely blocks, capped off by a handy goal just 10 seconds into the final term.
Sam Maraldo (4) dominated in the forward line and was the only multiple goal-scorer for the Pies.
The Senior side completes Round 7 sitting third on the 2025 VWFL Championship Division ladder.
The group will take plenty of learnings from this challenging contest and look to bounce back strongly next week against Essendon, aiming to finish the home and away season with momentum.
The Victorian Wheelchair Football League (VWFL) provides Victorians with a physical disability the opportunity to play in a competitive and adaptive version of Australian Rules football.
