With finals positions already locked in for the Championship side, Collingwood started the match with third place all but secured.
The main objective was to remain injury-free and offer Coach Andrew Paddle a chance to trial new line-ups ahead of next Sunday’s Elimination Final.
What unfolded was a high scoring shoot-out, that turned into a record-breaking contest.
For the first time in VWFL history, both teams scored over 100 points.
A total of 42 goals were scored in the 40-minute game format.
The Saints had the edge early, taking a two-goal lead into quarter after a frantic, hotly contested opening term.
But from the second quarter, Collingwood gained control.
Martyn Ford dominated in the ruck, while stand-in captain Josh Christian and Brad Axford remained composed in the backline amidst the free-flowing pace of play.
Forwards Pat McKay (14) and Sam Maraldo (10) were unstoppable, combining for a total of 24 goals.
St Kilda forward Shaun Groenewegen also delivered a standout performance in the historic match, with 11 goals to his name.
The Pies defeated the Saints by 35-points, in what was an incredible contest and display of sportsmanship between the two sides.
They now turn their attention to the do-or-die Elimination Final clash against Essendon this Sunday 3 August.
Community Division
Unlike the Senior side, the Community Division entered their match against the Saints with finals implications on the line.
A win would see them secure a top two finish, and a place in the Qualifying Final.
St Kilda started strongly, putting pressure on the Pies across the court.
But after halftime, Collingwood dug deep.
Forward Jack Elliott lit up the game late in the third quarter, kicking a goal to put the Pies in front — and following it up with another to swing the momentum in the Pies’ favour completely.
His energy, along with a spark from Michael Telban, lifted the team’s spirit to another level.
Through grit and resilience, the Pies claimed a 13-point win over the Saints, securing second place on the ladder and setting up a Qualifying Final showdown with Richmond.
The winner of that clash to be rewarded with a direct pathway into the 2025 VWFL Community Division Grand Final.
