Match Report: Pies get fairy tale win over Bombers

20 Jun 2023

The Collingwood Victorian Wheelchair Football League (VWFL) and the Community Wheelchair Football league (CWFL) teams both put together a strong performance on the weekend to defeat Essendon at the Boroondara Sports Complex.

The VWFL team didn’t start as strong as they have in previous weeks letting the Bombers get out to a 13 point lead heading into the quarter time break.

Coach Paddles asked the team to remain calm in possession, hit targets, and be confident in their preparation with several solid training sessions under their belt.

The Pies then turned it around just before half time to go into the break up by 11 points. This positive position was achieved after producing 5 goals to 1 during the second quarter.

Anthony Perito and Martyn Ford were a significant help in the forward line this week scoring 11 out of the 14 goals for the Pies, scoring multiple bombs from long range.

Brett Newman and Troy Hawkins played their roles brilliantly when called upon from the backline.

Josh Christian was an excellent team player in the centre always making space, putting blocks on the opposition which enabled the forwards to make leading patterns.

With a convincing win the Pies look forward to coming up against Richmond on Sunday, June 25th.

COMMUNITY WHEELCHAIR TEAM

The Community team started strong by scoring 3 goals to 1 during the first quarter of the match.

Coach Paddles asked that the team implement the same strategy that saw them take the win back in round one.

The second term didn’t go quite to plan as the Pies scored only 2 points, leaving time for the Bombers to even the scoreboard.

Jack Elliot and Andrew Paddle were a vital asset to the Pies forward line scoring 3 goals each while Alex Gale-Grime and Iain Paech produced a dominant performance at the other end, keeping Essendon to just 3 goals for the entire game.

Aaron Cutajar provided great support moving up and down the court and assisting his teammates throughout the entire match.

Matthew Blunt provided first use of the footy with his impressive ruckwork.

Both teams are pleased with their performances and look to push forward again next weekend.
