Collingwood Community: November Update

30 Nov 2021

The headlining news from November was the fantastic success of our wheelchair team as their season finished with a premiership.

As restrictions eased in Victoria, the VWFL continued with the last round of the season and then eventuated with the Grand Final, where our team faced a very strong Essendon line up.

It was an incredibly emotional day, as news of the passing of team captain Brendan Stroud came on the morning of the Grand Final. Brendan played a pivotal role in the inauguration of the VWFL, and has been integral to the program within our club.

The Collingwood community came together on Sunday, not only to show support for the team but also as a sign of respect for the work that Brendan has done to grow our community. It was a fantastic sight to see members of every Collingwood program present at Boroondara Sports Complex to witness a great contest.

Ben Jankovski, who stood up to captain the side, scored the winning goal with just moments left in the game. Ben has recently joined the community team as our Disability Inclusion Officer, a role that will see him promote inclusivity and togetherness within the club.

The community team has grown significantly this month. Ben will be joined by two new Community Program Officers; Khalid Muhammed who will specialise in cultural diversity and Inika Tobin-Salzman who joins as a recent graduate from our SEDA program.
