It was all one-way traffic at the State Netball and Hockey Centre yesterday, as Collingwood’s VWFL Championship Division side got their mojo back in a 133-point win against Hawthorn.
The Magpies set the tone through sharp ball movement from the opening bounce.
Martyn Ford dominated the clearances from siren-to-siren, giving forwards Sam Maraldo (10), Patrick McKay (8), Ben Jankovski (4) and Anthony Perito(3) plenty of opportunities to hit the scoreboard.
But despite the scoreboard pressure, Hawthorn never dropped their heads.
With a few injury setbacks and less rotation, the Hawks displayed great teamwork and produced several chains of handballs through traffic that showcased their commitment to take the game on.
Collingwood’s dominance and accuracy in front of goal was matched by its discipline around the contest.
Defender Brad Axford was a brick wall, repeatedly repelling the Hawks’ forward entries and turned defence into attack with his slick transition.
In the end, the margin reflected the Magpies’ efficiency in front of goal and cohesion on the day.
The Senior side completes Round 7 sitting third on the 2025 VWFL Championship Division ladder.
Community Division
The Magpies’ Community Division side produced a dominant display against the Hawks, commanding the team’s second big win for the day.
In the centre, Matthew Blunt worked tirelessly in the ruck contests. His ability to free up his teammates through smart positioning really opened the game up for the Magpies’ forwards.
Captain Troy Hawkins was once again silky smooth in defence. His agility for groundballs were impossible for Hawthorn to match, and Hawkins was a vital reason for Collingwood’s ability to maintain possession.
Aaron Cutajar’s star shone brightly up forward. Taking numerous strong marks and putting his teammates ahead of his own scoreline at times, Cutajar displayed great character and his team-first mentality.
After Round 4, the Pies are sitting on second of the Community League Ladder.
Collingwood will look to keep the momentum going in their favour next week against Richmond on Sunday 13 July, at the State Netball and Hockey Centre in Parkville.
