VRGF: Sports betting ‘education’ needs to start early

21 Apr 2021

As a proud Love the Game partner, Collingwood Football Club protects young people from sports betting advertising.

Sports betting ads are everywhere, so it’s not surprising children today are growing up to think sport and betting go together or that men aged 18 to 24 years are the largest group of sports bettors in Victoria.

Young people need to learn that betting is not all fun and games before they’re legally allowed to participate, which is why it’s important to have a conversation about gambling with your kids early, much like having ‘the talk’ about alcohol, drugs, and sex.

Sport and Life Training (SALT) and Love the Game have developed some useful tips and conversation starters to help parents and other responsible adults talk with kids about gambling. In this video, SALT founder Dave Burt explains the risks of sports betting and how gambling promotions shape kids’ attitudes towards sport and the odds.

Join us in helping kids to understand that sport is about loving the game, not the odds.

Love the Game works with SALT to deliver education on gambling awareness in local sporting clubs and sporting programs across Victoria. These sessions are delivered to programs including SEDA College, Next Generation Academy, and Collingwood’s Empowered Pies and Wheelchair Football team.

The Love the Game program also works with grassroots sporting clubs to help protect their members and young players from sports betting advertising. More than 500 local sporting clubs and all 10 Victorian AFL teams have committed to not taking sports betting sponsorship. The Yarra Junior Football League is one example of a Love the Game partner who champions the ‘Love the Game, Not the Odds’ message in their league.
